Galvanized Pipe Leak Repair on 100-Gallon Water Heater in Salinas, CA
Brass and Copper Repiping Upgrade Restores Safe Water Heater Operation in Salinas
The Problem: Corroded Galvanized Pipe Causing Active Leak
When we arrived at this Salinas home, the 100-gallon water heater had developed a leak at the inlet connection, a common failure point when older galvanized fittings begin to corrode.
- Galvanized Pipe Failure: The existing galvanized nipple and 90-degree fitting had deteriorated over time, causing an active leak directly at the top of the water heater.
• Mixed Material Risk: The transition between galvanized steel and copper piping can accelerate corrosion, especially without proper dielectric protection, increasing the likelihood of future failures.
Our Solution: Brass and Copper Repiping at the Water Heater Inlet
To eliminate the leak and prevent future corrosion issues, we rebuilt the inlet connection using more durable materials and a proper configuration:
- Water Heater Drain Down: We safely drained the 100-gallon tank to allow for a clean and controlled repair at the inlet connection.
- Removal of Failed Components: We cut out the existing 1” copper line and removed the leaking galvanized pipe and 90-degree fitting from the water heater inlet.
- Brass and Copper Upgrade: We installed a new brass nipple and 90-degree fitting, then repiped the connection using copper and a brass union, creating a stronger, corrosion-resistant transition.
- System Refill and Testing: The tank was refilled, air was fully bled from the system, and all connections were pressure tested to confirm a complete seal.
- Water Heater Restart: Once verified leak-free, we safely relit the water heater and confirmed proper operation.
The Result: Leak Eliminated and Long-Term Reliability Restored
The leaking connection was fully resolved, and the upgraded brass and copper configuration provides a significantly more durable solution compared to the original galvanized setup.
This Salinas homeowner now has a properly sealed and reinforced water heater inlet, reducing the risk of future leaks and extending the life of the system.
At Family Home Plumbing, we approach every water heater repair with long-term performance in mind, not just as a temporary fix, but as a solution built to last.
