Cast-iron piping is extremely common in older homes around the Monterey County area, but once it begins to crack, corrode, or allow root intrusion, sewer problems become unavoidable. Recently, our team at Family Home Plumbing Services completed a major sewer system restoration for a homeowner experiencing ongoing drain issues and blockages.

Phase 1: Replacing the old 2-inch cast-iron under the home

Much of the piping underneath the house had already been upgraded to ABS, but several exposed sections of old 2-inch cast-iron were still active. These aging lines can restrict flow and are prone to leaks. Our team:

• Removed the remaining cast-iron piping

   

• Installed durable ABS replacement piping

   

• Secured all new connections for proper flow and venting

   

• Ensured the entire under-home drainage system is now 100 percent ABS

Phase 2: Inspecting the main sewer line

After running our sewer camera, we discovered that the 4-inch cast-iron main line dropping beneath the foundation had heavy scaling, deterioration, and invasive roots. This section is a common failure point in older homes.

To protect the property from future backups and structural damage, we recommended a full replacement of this buried line.

Phase 3: Installing a new 70-foot 4-inch sewer line

Our crew will dig and expose the damaged pipe all the way from the back of the home to the side of the house, extending out toward the street. This new ABS line will:

• Eliminate root intrusion

   

• Restore full sewer flow

   

• Reduce the risk of stoppages and sewage backups

   

• Provide long-term durability and peace of mind

   

Once the trench is open, we will complete all re-piping in one coordinated workday to minimize disruption.
