Main Water Service Upgrade and Pressure Regulator Installation in Seaside
Replacing a broken, buried gate valve with accessible modern components ensures safety and compliance.
The Importance of Accessible Shutoffs The main water shutoff valve is the most important emergency control in a home. If a pipe bursts or a leak occurs, a homeowner needs to be able to turn the water off instantly. For a resident in Seaside, this simple safety measure was compromised because the main valve was buried in the ground and the handle had broken off.
Assessing the Damage When a valve is buried directly in the soil, corrosion and mechanical failure are inevitable. In this case, the old gate valve was not only inaccessible due to its location, but the handle had snapped off, rendering it useless. Additionally, we noted that the system lacked a functioning pressure regulator, which is required to protect the home’s interior plumbing from municipal water pressure spikes.
The Repipe Solution To fix this, we had to cut out the old compromised section and rebuild the service entry. The process involved:
- Excavation & Removal: We located the PVC riser in the ground and removed the old, broken gate valve.
- New Piping: We repiped the main service line above ground using durable copper piping.
- Modern Components: We installed a new quarter-turn ball valve for easy emergency shutoffs, a new pressure regulator to control flow, and a hose bib for convenience.
Final Systems Check After the installation was complete, we turned the water back on to verify the workmanship. There were no leaks. We then calibrated the new pressure regulator to 65 psi. This is the optimal setting to ensure good water flow at fixtures while preventing stress on the home’s pipes. The homeowner now has a fully code-compliant, accessible, and safe main water entry.
