Main Water Line Leak Detection and Copper Repair Service
Locating and repairing an underground leak involves precision excavation and upgrading failed connections to durable copper.
The Challenge of Underground Leaks A leak in the main water line is a homeowner’s nightmare. Because these pipes are buried underground, the first signs of trouble are often subtle—a wet spot in the yard, a drop in water pressure, or an unexpectedly high water bill. For this job, the issue was located deep in the soil, requiring immediate excavation to prevent water waste and potential foundation damage.
Excavation and Diagnosis We began by digging to expose the main waterline entering the home. Once the pipe was uncovered, the source of the failure became clear. The leak originated at a transition point involving a PVC male adapter and a section of existing 1-inch copper pipe. Plastic-to-metal transitions in the ground can often be weak points due to ground shifting and different material expansion rates.
Executing a Permanent Repair A temporary patch is never the solution for a main line. We proceeded to cut out the compromised section to ensure a solid, long-lasting fix. The repair process involved:
- Removal: We cut out the faulty PVC adapter and about two feet of the existing copper pipe.
- Repiping: We replaced the removed section with high-quality copper pipe and durable fittings.
- Connection: The new copper was soldered into place to create a seamless, watertight bond.
Verifying the Fix Before filling the trench back in, we turned the water back on from the meter to test the system under full pressure. The new connections held perfectly with no leaks detected. The repair not only stopped the immediate leak but also removed a weak link in the system, giving the homeowner peace of mind that their water service is secure.
