Main Sewer Line Clog Cleared and Structural Pipe Defect Located in Carmel

Strategic troubleshooting through a toilet drain access revealed a shifted sewer pipe requiring future structural repair.

Accessing the Main Sewer Line When a main sewer line clogs, the first step is always identifying the most effective point of access. For a homeowner in Carmel, the existing exterior cleanouts only provided a path away from the residence. To clear a blockage affecting the interior drainage, our technician had to pull a toilet to access the main line directly from underneath the home.

The Investigation and Clearing Once access was established through the toilet drain, we utilized a professional-grade snake to clear the stubborn clog. While the immediate goal was restoring flow, a permanent fix requires understanding why the backup occurred in the first place. After the line was successfully cleared and drainage was restored to the bathroom fixtures, we transitioned to a diagnostic phase.

Sewer Camera Findings Using high-definition camera equipment, we performed a lateral inspection of the pipe. The investigation revealed a critical structural issue approximately 64 feet into the line. The footage showed:

  • Shifted Pipe: A section of the sewer line had shifted out of alignment.
  • Improper Connection: The pipes were no longer properly seated together, creating a catch point for debris.
  • Carmel Trap: The presence of an old-style Carmel trap, which can often lead to recurring drainage issues in older area properties.

Strategic Recommendations We utilized a locator to pin the defect’s position at a depth of 2.5 feet, located just outside the crawl space. While the immediate backup is cleared, the structural shift remains a long-term risk for recurring clogs. We provided the homeowner with a comprehensive plan to excavate the failing section, remove the outdated Carmel trap, and install a modern two-way cleanout to ensure easier maintenance and a permanent solution to the shifting pipe.Technician snaking sewer line through toilet drain.
